Back in the days of the good ‘ole N64, Goldeneye 007 was one of the most played and highly acclaimed games on the platform. Due to crazy copyright laws, nobody expected the beloved classic to return via Virtual Console or XBLA. Activision has done something right though, and now the shooter is being re-made exclusively for the Wii. Oh, and the game is pretty awesome, too.
Splitscreen multiplayer deathmatch was the only mode of Goldeneye on the show floor, but it was very enjoyable nonetheless — one setup had four players going at it, and the other had two. The first thing that struck me as surprising about the game was that it supports the Classic Controller — I’m actually better at shooters with IR control — and the demo was only playable with the Classic Controller (Pro to be exact).
There are eight characters from the Bond universe to play as, including Jaws and Oddjob. Oddjob is still pretty cheap too, because he can throw his hat once per life for an insta-kill. The controls felt fine with the Classic Controller, and probably better than the original game did. For those of you who prefer IR controls, no need to worry — they’ll be in the game as a control option. 16 different game modes will be in the game, such as paintball. Online multiplayer naturally is included, with up to eight players, upgrades called accolades, but unfortunately only five maps are currently provided. Accolades are actually really cool, because they’re rewarded through specific in-game accomplishments, such as headshots and double kills. I had 12 different accolades after my first match.
While the game was a ton of fun, the multiplayer does seem a bit basic, and the visuals could use some polish. Goldeneye 007 is slated for a November release, so developer Eurocom has a lot of time to fix the game up. One interesting note: Daniel Craig has replaced Pierce Brosnan as James Bond in the game, likely due to licensing problems. Goldeneye 007 is looking to pull the strings of nostalgia in veteran fans — be sure to hit up RoboAwesome for future coverage on the game!
