Sonic Colors Impressions | E3 2010

Sonic Colors for Wii.

I made my way over to where Epic Mickey was being showcased, hopeful to get my hands on the only Disney title I’ve ever wanted to play. Predicting a level of popularity, Disney set up two TV’s side by side for the media to play the game. Unfortunately for me, there was a pretty long line for Mickey’s epic adventure. So, I went one section to the right and played the Wii version of Sonic Colors (not to be confused with Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode One). To say the least, I was pleasantly surprised.

I’ve never really been big on the Sonic series in the past. I owned Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast but lost interest in the game after the first few hours. The demo on the show floor had three different levels to play through — two were regular stages, and the third was a boss battle. Each of the levels started off in standard 3D Sonic view with the camera placed behind Sonic as he zips through the course. Almost immediately, though, the camera panned over to the side, making Sonic Colors a 2D platformer.

The A button allows Sonic to jump and pounce enemies, and quickly pressing the A button again will shoot Sonic to the nearest enemy. Speed plays a big part in Sonic Colors, and from the two basic stages I was able to play, Sega won’t be sacrificing any of it for cheap gimmicks. However, there are power-ups in the game, but they aren’t used to the extent of something like the Werehog from Sonic Unleashed — they’re more like the power-ups from Mario games. The one power-up I came across turned Sonic into a drill for a few seconds, allowing me to skip some of the level.

The boss fight had virtually no running at all. To beat the boss, I had to jump on rotating platforms and strike its head from above. I would have preferred a high-speed boss battle, but there’s always a chance for those types of battles later in the game.

From the few levels I played, Sonic Colors is actually a pretty fun game. Sega has a pretty horrid track record with Sonic as of late,so this could potentially change in later levels of the game. Check RoboAwesome for future Sonic Colors coverage!

Carl B. Nintendo Editor, PR Manager | When Carl was a kid he would always play whatever his family had for the SNES. He was really into the Super Star Wars series and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Once the N64 launched, his parents got that and a copy of Ocarina of Time which he played to death, and that sort of planted the seeds of Zelda addiction. Now Carl spends his days in a padded room somewhere in Colorado rocking back and forth mumbling something about a Triforce and a guy named Ganondorf. Yep… that’s pretty much it. So sad…
