Just when you thought they couldn’t put anyone else out of business Walmart announces that they’re going to start buying and selling used games out of vending machines.
Companies like Gamestop could face some trouble with superstores like Walmart stepping on their toes like this.
In fact – right down the street from my house there is a Super Walmart and a smaller video game chain store called Play N Trade in the same shopping center.
Sure I’ll admit that I do shop at Walmart for some items like groceries and toiletries but when it comes to my beloved video games I hit up the smaller game retailers. For one they have a better selection and not only that they hire younger people usually who have some connection to video games unlike the dude standing behind the counter at Walmart who’s last console was an Atari 2600.
Personal feelings about Walmart aside I do think this could be trouble for smaller game retailers (and forget Mom and Pop video game stores – you don’t even see those anymore).
Even though stores like Gamestop are as common as McDonalds I still think this is bad news for the industry.
Soon enough we’re going to be McMicroWalMerica…
